The Russian Short Course Swimming Championships concluded the other day at one of the Volga Region University's venues, the Aquatics Palace. The best swimmers competed in the second stage of the Friendship Games. During the event, 48 medal events were held between more than 1,000 athletes from 22 countries of the world. The prestigious tournament brought together students of the Volga Region State University of Sports and Tourism.
Two female representatives of the sports university, fourth year student Irina Zlobina and Olesya Korchagina, teacher of the Department of Theory and Methodology of Aquatics, won silver and bronze medals in the 4x50 freestyle relay in the women's and mixed relay events. Irina also added another gold to her medal haul in the 4x200 relay (V/W).
Students and alumni of Volga Region University also made their mark on other teams. Anna Egorova from Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug - Kaliningrad won two gold medals (800m hurdles, 400m hurdles) and one silver medal (200m hurdles). Freshman Alexander Stepanov, a member of the Moscow-Yaroslavl Region team, won two first places in the 800m and 1500m (w/s). Two more freshmen Alexey Krutikh and Nikolay Zuev, competing for the Republic of Tatarstan, became bronze medallists in the 4 x 50m relay (k/n).
